Established in 2010, the United Nations Programme for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is a unified entity advancing women's rights, improving gender equality, and empowering all women and girls. Globally, they work with governments and civil societies to ensure that laws, policies, and programmes truly benefit women and girls worldwide. Composed of 193 member states, UN Women addresses gender-based challenges ranging from domestic violence to economic liberty. In the past, they have led to the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality in 2015, and have continually supported the Commission on the Status of Women.
UN Women focuses on three main aspects: Supporting inter-governmental bodies in the formation of policies and global standards, implementing these standards in member states, providing technical and financial support when necessary to create partnerships with civil society, and leading and coordinating global gender equality, promoting accountability through regular monitoring. It is through these three goals that UN Women and its Member States uphold female leadership, economic empowerment, freedom from violence, and humanitarian action.
As a General Assembly, UN Women is a beginner-friendly committee that welcomes delegates of all levels. This iteration, the committee will observe regular Rules of Procedure. Position Papers are mandatory for award consideration.
